Top 6 Revitalising Herbs

Saturday, December 29, 2018

Have you been feeling a little low on energy lately?  Before you reach for the coffee or some other pick-me-up, consider using herbs for a much-needed boost.  There are several different herbs that are great for increasing your energy and making you feel better in general.

If you suffer from fatigue, it is a sign your body is toxic, your adrenal glands are burned out and you really need a good colon cleanse, liver and gallbladder cleanse, parasite cleanse or chemical and heavy metal cleanse, or even emotional cleanse. After cleansing your body you should consider dietary changes. There are some beneficial herbs that can help you fight fatigue until you take the necessary steps to improve your health.

Plants with revitalizing or restorative properties that can enhance health has been around for thousands of years. Many of the herbs that we know as ‘adaptogens’ were first used in Ayurveda (India) and in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

Here are six top adaptogens:

1. Siberian Ginseng

Also known as Eleutherococcus, increases the body’s ability to handle stress, reduces fatigue and naturally supports healthy adrenal function and hormone levels. As an adaptogen is a substance that helps the body better cope with stress, either mental or physical and increase longevity and vitality.

In addition to being a supportive everyday adaptogen, eleuthero offers support for those in highly stressful jobs, or who work long hours or have erratic schedules. It often appears to support the quality of sleep while reducing night time waking but doesn't cause drowsiness during the day.

Eleuthero also lower blood sugar levels, supports the immune system, helping reduce incidence of colds and acute illness, and is equally beneficial during recovery from chronic illnesses and surgery.

Properties: Immune tonic, nervine, hypoglycaemic, endurance booster

2. Schisandra

Schisandra is a Chinese herb that stimulates the central nervous system and helps to detoxify the liver.  It also provides a mental boost and prevents immune- suppression when exposed to chronic stress.  Schisandra also increases physical and mental exercise capacities as well as improving adaptability to environmental stressors.

Properties: Liver tonic, liver protector, hormone balancer, anti-oxidant, nerve tonic

3. Licorice Root

This fatigue-fighting herb helps rebuild damaged adrenals and reduces cravings for sweets and caffeine which cause an energy crash after an initial rush. The glycyrrhizin contained in licorice root enhances the body’s cortisol activity increasing energy and reducing fatigue. Supports skin disorders, respiratory conditions, gastrointestinal problems.

Properties: hypoglycaemic, reduces sugar craving, restorative, anti-spasmodic

4. Ginkgo Biloba

Tracing back nearly 300 million years, Ginkgo biloba is the oldest surviving tree species on earth. Ginkgo is considered a prescription herb in Germany and is used to reduce fatigue and enhance oxygen utilization. In cases of fatigue, the adrenals suffer from a significant amount of oxidative stress, leading to an increase in free radicals. Ginko biloba has been studied to protect the adrenal glands, the brain and the liver from damaging free radicals.

Properties: circulatory tonic, brain cognition, improves memory

5. Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is also known as Winter cherry or Withania, and it is a rejuvenating Ayurvedic tonic herb.  It is able to increase energy and endurance, it promotes longevity, supports vitality, calms the mind, enhances mental functioning, strengthens the immune system, improves sleep, and helps the body to overcome any imbalances that may have been caused by stress, poor diet, lack of sleep or environmental factors.

Ashwagandha enhances endocrine function and can help support an underactive thyroid and balanced functioning of the testes and adrenal glands. It is often used in Ayurvedic formulas to support fertility and vitality in men.

Ashwagandha can also be supportive during heavy periods because it is rich in iron and has been used in Africa as a uterine tonic for women who miscarry.

Properties: Immune tonic, fertility tonic, nervine relaxant, antispasmodic

6. Rhodiola

Traditionally, this herb was used to increase mental stamina and physical endurance, boost the immune system during winter, and support fertility and endocrine health in men and women.

Like eleuthero, rhodiola can help support the immune system in athletes, when hard training can sometimes cause a decline in immune function. Rhodiola may also help balance blood sugar levels, improve fertility and reproductive health in both sexes, strengthen the heart, and protect the heart from stress-related damage.

Properties: Antiviral, nerve tonic, immune stimulant, heart tonic, neuro-protectant

For every human illness, somewhere in the world there exists a plant which is the cure. I believe there is healing potential locked inside plants, which is integral with their evolution, just as it is part of human evolution to learn to tap into this wonderful gift of Nature - Rudolf Steiner
