With the focus in the media about the safety of frozen fruits and berries.  It’s not just contamination from water sources, but also pesticides which do affect certain fruit and vegetables more than others.

Most of us know that going organic is better for the environment and good for our health. Organic alternatives are available for everything from meat and dairy products to skin care. But with the overwhelming array of choices confronting us on the supermarket shelves, organic is often put in the too-hard basket instead of our shopping basket.

Enter the Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen, have been made by the Environmental Working Group, a health and environmental research organisation. Its analysis of these foods found that by using the lists as a guideline, consumers could potentially reduce pesticide exposure by almost 90 per cent.

Pesticides are toxic by design! Different pesticides have been linked to a variety of health problems, including hormone disruption, cancer and brain toxicity.

But for most people, switching to organic produce is a gradual process. Because organic foods tend to be more expensive than their counterparts, making informed choices in the produce aisle helps minimize pesticide consumption while keeping the budget in check!

Should you avoid the dirty dozen?

Absolutely not! Fresh fruits and vegetables are always a healthier choice than processed foods. Besides, non-organic processed foods are sure to contain many chemicals too! Instead, let the guide below help you choose your allocation of organic vs. non-organic purchases.

Why eat organic food?

All of this opens up a bigger discussion about the choice to eat organic food — and the reasons that not everyone does. Often, the decision comes down to bottom line. Non-organic foods usually cost less money.

Fruit and vegetables on the Clean 15 list, require minimal intervention in order to flourish, and in their non-organic form contain the least amount of nasties. These foods are: asparagus, avocado, cabbage, rockmelon, kiwifruit, eggplant, mushroom, grapefruit, onion, mango, peas, watermelon, sweet potato, corn and pineapple.

The Dirty Dozen list, however, is made up of fruit and vegetables that are often laden with pesticides and other chemicals. These are apples, capsicum, blueberries, celery, grapes, cucumber, lettuce, nectarines, peaches, potatoes, strawberries, and spinach.

The Dirty Dozen should be at the top of everyone’s list when it comes to converting to organic. Most of these foods are generally consumed with the skin on, so even peeling them or a good wash may not remove all the residual nasties.
